Ontology, in the sphere of the semantic web, formalizes descriptors and their relationships in a given domain (ex. linguistics). This semantic formalization (relationships), beyond a standard description (TEI, ISOcat), allows automated reasoning on the data. The GOLD community (project funded by E-MELD, The Linguist List) is working on the definition of an ontology based on practices in all areas of linguistics.
