Human communication involves the simultaneous use of several channels, under several modalities, all participating in interpersonal interaction. These channels include the audio-phonatory modality (speech) and the visuo-gestural modality (glances, gestures, other movements and positions of the body, signs…), the latter constituting the main modality defining the sign languages, which are organized into systems of different types of gestural units.
