Digital data is often associated with symbolic (or sometimes analogical) data allowing it to be described in detail and studied (for example the content of speech, the form of gestures, the gaze direction, etc.). In most cases, this symbolic data is associated with a certain time point or a certain time interval (we will use the term time alignment here). Specialized tools called “annotation software” are needed to create and edit them. These software like ELAN, CLAN, ANVIL, Transcriber, PRAAT, Transana are often dedicated to the study of language or gestures, or text annotations. Other software like ADVENE is more dedicated to the annotation of sequences than to the transcription of complete corpora. For more specialized uses, generic tools such as spreadsheets or databases will be used.
